Bayflex® XGT-16 Black polyurethane system for ladder rack application: Bayer MaterialScience’s Bayflex® XGT-16 Black polyurethane system provides skin for innovative truck rack

Kramer Rack Plus of Atlanta, Georgia has designed a truck ladder rack that meets the demanding requirements for hauling various types of loads while also offering the option of customized styling (patents pending). This unique combination of rugged durability and style is achieved by encapsulating the rack with Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) LLC’s Bayflex® XGT-16 Black elastomeric polyurethane system.

Attendees at Composites & Polycon 2007, which took place Oct. 17-19, 2007 at the Tampa Convention Center, got a first-hand look at the polyurethane-encapsulated ladder rack at the BMS booth.

Kramer Rack+™ is ideal for hauling utility equipment such as ladders, piping, scaffolding and lumber, as well as for transporting recreational items including surfboards, kayaks, canoes and bikes. The 10-foot-long rack is comprised of steel tubing encapsulated with the Bayflex XGT-16 Black system during the Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) process. The system has a flexural modulus of 16,000 psi at room temperature. It is pigmented black and used in applications requiring excellent impact properties, such as bumpers for buses and other vehicles.

Prior to molding the ladder rack, a black in-mold coating that provides UV stability is applied to the inside mold surface. The rack can later be painted another color or have graphics applied to it for a customized look.

The ladder rack features wall thicknesses that vary from roughly _ of an inch to 2 inches. For that reason, the ability of the Bayflex system to mold thick and thin walls was important for this application.

“The Bayflex XGT-16 Black system’s extra gel time gives us the freedom of more time to inject it into the mold, which helps us force all the air out of the mold, resulting in a perfect part with no air entrapments,” said Doug Moore, vice president, EPW, Inc., which encapsulates, finishes and ships the ladder racks from its Elkhart, Ind. facility.

“The extra gel time afforded by the Bayflex XGT-16 Black system is a definite asset in applications with varying mold thicknesses, like the Kramer Rack+,” said Craig Snyder, senior technical marketing representative for BMS. “Our extensive portfolio of elastomeric polyurethane systems ensures we will be able to outfit our customers with the right material for even the most challenging molding applications.”

According to Moore, BMS met one-on-one with EPW during the planning phase and provided technical support for designing the mold. “These guys have an incredible amount of knowledge and experience molding urethanes, and we wouldn’t be where we are today without that support. All we have to do is call, and they stick with us until any issue is resolved,” said Moore.

“The Kramer Rack+ is the only stylized truck rack on the market, and the Bayflex XGT-16 Black system gives the ladder rack a perfect blank canvas that can be left black or customized to meet the diverse needs and style demands of truck owners,” said Jerry Kramer, president and CEO of Kramer Rack Plus. “In normal use, the ladder rack tends to take a lot of abuse, so we needed something that could take a beating and bounce back. This is the material.”

Customizable truck ladder racks from Kramer Rack Plus are encapsulated with Bayflex® XGT-16 Black. The system has extended gel time, assisting the molder in forcing all air out of the mold to create a finished product free of air entrapments.
Kramer Rack+™ is a trademark of Kramer Rack Plus. Kramer Rack Plus has several patents, with more pending.
